Gunmen Kill Three and Abduct Catholic Priest in Deadly Attack in Nigeria
Gunmen have killed three individuals and abducted a Catholic priest alongside several others during a violent early morning assault on the clergyman's residence in northern Nigeria's Kaduna state. Church and police sources confirmed the incident on Sunday, revealing the attack occurred in the Kauru district on Saturday morning.
Details of the Assault
The Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan identified the kidnapped clergyman as Nathaniel Asuwaye, the parish priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Karku. According to the diocese, the attack began at approximately 3:20 a.m. local time, resulting in the abduction of ten other people in addition to the priest. Three residents were reported killed during the assault.
A spokesperson for the Kaduna police provided a slightly different account, confirming the incident but stating that five people were abducted in total. The spokesperson clarified that the three individuals killed were members of the security forces, noting, "Security agents exchanged gunfire with the bandits, killed some of them, and unfortunately two soldiers and a police officer lost their lives."

This assault underscores the ongoing and severe insecurity plaguing the Kaduna region. It follows closely on the heels of a recent incident where security services successfully rescued all 166 worshippers abducted in attacks on two churches elsewhere in Kaduna. Rights group Amnesty International issued a strong statement on Sunday, condemning the Nigerian government's handling of the security crisis. The organization asserted that the situation is "increasingly getting out of hand" and accused the government of "gross incompetence" and a failure to protect civilians. Amnesty International highlighted that gunmen continue to kill, abduct, and terrorise rural communities across several northern states, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
A presidency spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment regarding the latest attack. Meanwhile, Pope Leo expressed solidarity with the victims of recent assaults in Nigeria during his weekly address to the faithful in St. Peter's Square.
