Real Housewives Star and Husband Face 15 Years for $5,000 Supermarket Theft
Housewives Star Charged with $5,000 Supermarket Theft in Florida

In a startling case of alleged retail fraud, a reality television personality and her spouse have been charged with stealing more than $5,000 worth of merchandise from a supermarket in Florida. Melany Viljoen, known for her appearance on the South African series Real Housewives of Pretoria, and her husband Petrus Viljoen were arrested in Palm Beach on Tuesday following an extensive investigation.

Details of the Alleged Theft Scheme

According to authorities, the couple visited the same Publix location on 1001 S Federal Highway in Boca Raton dozens of times over a six-month period starting in August 2025. They reportedly drove a black Range Rover during these trips. Police made the arrest after performing a traffic stop on the vehicle, which had been identified in surveillance footage from the store.

Store officials and law enforcement reviewed 52 separate transactions, uncovering 392 stolen items. The loot included everyday goods such as fruit, soda, toilet paper, and sparkling water, with a total value of $5,302.17.

Method of Operation: Ticket Switching

Prosecutors allege that the Viljoens employed a technique called 'ticket switching' to carry out their thefts. This involved replacing barcodes on more expensive items with cheaper ones, allowing them to pay reduced prices at self-checkout stations. An affidavit states that multiple items were scanned as low-cost seasoning packets instead of their actual, higher-priced counterparts.

Additionally, the couple is accused of simply failing to scan items altogether and walking out with them in their shopping cart. Investigators claim that Petrus Viljoen would often engage store employees in conversation, seemingly to distract them while Melany committed the thefts. He is also alleged to have pushed carts past the point of sale without paying.

Legal Consequences and Charges

Both Melany and Petrus Viljoen have been charged with aggravated grand retail theft. In Florida, this offense is classified as a second-degree felony, carrying a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years. The charges specifically relate to theft exceeding $3,000 in value.

Conflicting Statements from the Accused

During post-Miranda interviews, Melany Viljoen insisted that she acted alone, despite both individuals admitting to being the people captured on surveillance footage. Conversely, Petrus Viljoen has denied any involvement in the crimes, according to local reports.

Background of the Couple

Melany Viljoen gained brief fame on Real Housewives of Pretoria, a series that premiered in 2022 and followed affluent South African women, but ended after just one season. She runs a weekly podcast that posted episodes until October 2025 and owns a nail brand. Petrus Viljoen describes himself as a 'celebrity lawyer.'

The couple moved to the United States from South Africa last summer. Melany has stated that she fled her home country due to safety concerns, claiming that black South Africans targeted her and her businesses, leading to intimidation of staff. 'It just became so scary for me in South Africa that I couldn't wait to leave,' she told IOL.

Since her arrest, Melany's Instagram page has been archived. The case has drawn attention from media outlets, with the Boca Raton Police Department and Publix being contacted for comments.
