Jealous Ex-Convict's Rage Ignites Manila Inferno, Destroying 300 Homes
Manila Fire Horror: 300 Homes Burn After Jealous Rage

A devastating fire, reportedly ignited by a jealous ex-convict who discovered his wife with another man, has ravaged a densely packed residential area in Manila, Philippines, destroying approximately 300 homes and leaving hundreds of people homeless. The blaze, which caused an estimated £20,000 in damage, erupted in the Intramuros district on Wednesday afternoon, creating a scene of chaos and destruction.

Suspect's Alleged Motive and Actions

The suspect, identified locally as Burnok, had only been released from prison the night before the incident and returned to live with his wife in Barangay 655. According to local media reports, including The Daily Star, he returned home to find his wife with a man he believed was her lover, which allegedly enraged him.

Witnesses reported seeing Burnok leave the home in a rush before returning later with a container filled with gasoline. He then poured the flammable liquid inside and around the fourth-floor dwelling, which quickly ignited. The fire rapidly spread through the building and to neighbouring properties, fueled by light, flammable construction materials common in the area.

Community Outrage and Violent Retaliation

As the inferno took hold, furious residents of nearby apartments, angered by the destruction of their homes, reportedly attacked the suspect. Barangay 655 captain Johnny Yacub told The Manila Times that villagers "ganged up on him and beat him up," despite his instructions not to harm the man. The suspect, who has a history of previous convictions for robbery and other jail stints, was later taken into custody alive by police after sustaining injuries from the beating.

Firefighting Challenges and Evacuation Efforts

The Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that the fire was first alerted around 4:48 pm, with emergency crews battling for nearly seven hours to bring it under control. It was finally extinguished at 11:30 pm, after causing widespread devastation.

Firefighters faced significant obstacles in containing the blaze, including limited water supply, storage constraints, and narrow access roads, which slowed suppression operations. Thick black smoke billowed over the city as burning debris rained down, forcing residents, workers, and small vendors to flee urgently. Many scrambled to escape with children, pets, and whatever belongings they could carry, highlighting the rapid and terrifying spread of the flames.

Aftermath and Ongoing Investigations

The incident has left a community in shock, with hundreds now displaced and facing an uncertain future. Authorities are continuing their investigations into the exact cause of the fire and the suspect's actions, while relief efforts are underway to support those affected by this tragic event.
