A British national born in Somalia has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green, north-west London. Essa Suleiman, 45, is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later today following the announcement of charges on Friday.
The victims, Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Ben Baila, 76, were hospitalised with knife wounds sustained during the attack on Tuesday morning. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Jewish community in London and beyond.
Prime Minister's Response
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer visited the scene of the attack on Thursday, meeting with first responders and community leaders. During his visit, he was heckled by protesters who accused his government of failing to protect Jewish citizens. Jewish leaders have warned that antisemitism is becoming increasingly normalised in the UK.
Addressing the nation from Downing Street, Sir Keir said: “This government will do everything in our power to stamp this hatred out. We will strengthen our security and protect our Jewish community. But I also call on everyone decent in this country to open their eyes to Jewish pain, Jewish suffering and Jewish fear.”
Community Reaction
The stabbings have reignited concerns about rising antisemitic incidents across the country. Community leaders are calling for stronger measures to ensure the safety of Jewish people and to combat hate crimes. The Metropolitan Police have increased patrols in the area to reassure the public.
Suleiman’s court appearance is expected to provide further details on the motive behind the attack, which police are treating as a hate crime.
