Twerking Spring Break Reveler Dies After Texas Jeep Crash

A shirtless Spring Break reveler who was filmed twerking on top of a moving Jeep moments before it crashed has tragically died from his injuries. Michael Brown, a 22-year-old from Nixon, Texas, was pronounced dead last Friday morning after spending nearly a week in hospital with a serious head injury sustained in the March 14 collision.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The crash occurred on State Highway 361 in the Gulf Coast town of Port Aransas. Brown had been riding in the passenger seat of a 2012 Jeep Wrangler when it collided with a Tesla. Video shared widely on social media shows a shirtless man, later identified as Brown, climbing out of the Jeep's roof and twerking as the vehicle drove down the highway just moments before impact.

Following the collision, three swimsuit-clad young people were seen next to the shattered Jeep while emergency medical services assisted an injured person on the road. The driver of the Jeep, 24-year-old Riley Rhoades, was arrested after breath tests recorded blood alcohol content (BAC) levels of .14 and .12, significantly above Texas's legal limit of .08.

Legal Consequences and Community Response

Rhoades has been charged with one count of intoxication assault and is currently being held in the Nueces County Jail on a $10,000 bond. The shocking death has left the coastal community of Port Aransas on edge, with local officials expressing concern over safety during the busy Spring Break period.

Port Aransas Mayor Wendy Moore told local news outlets that first responders prepare annually for large crowds, but noted that many safety issues are caused by visitors. "We want those residents and visitors alike to know that we work really hard to keep these things isolated and keep them safe," Moore said, urging everyone to be diligent about their surroundings.

Remembering Michael Brown

Friends and family have remembered Brown as a "truly special" and "energetic" young man. Kelsey Hurley posted on Facebook following news of his death, saying "His energetic personality was unmatched, and my son fondly recalls their time together."

Brittany Shaver also wrote that Brown "wasn't just a damn good cousin but [an] awesome son, amazing brother and the best of best friends/friend to others." She added that he "loved to just have fun and let loose." An online fundraiser has collected $660 toward Brown's funeral expenses.

Increased Enforcement During Spring Break

Port Aransas Police Lieutenant Mike Hannon revealed that officials have made 15 drinking while intoxicated arrests so far this Spring Break season. Additional help has been called in from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Department of Public Safety troopers to manage the influx of visitors.

"What the community does not want here, what we are looking for, is bad conduct, unsafe conduct, people that are driving in an unsafe way, conducting themselves in an unsafe way," Hannon stated. "We've done that with a much higher level of enforcement, citations, and arrests, we're hoping to deter that, and have people who want to come here for that purpose, not come here."

The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and reckless behavior during holiday periods, particularly in popular tourist destinations like Port Aransas.
