A Lifeline During the Falklands War
The year was 1976 when Rosalia Lelchuk Staricoff and her family arrived in the UK from Argentina. At the research laboratories of the Middlesex hospital, Rosalia shared a bench with Janice Taverne, forging a friendship that would prove vital years later.
An Unforgettable Act of Support
When the Falklands War erupted in 1982, the family's bank accounts were frozen. In this time of crisis, Janice and her husband, Dick Taverne, stepped in to provide crucial help. Their unwavering support continued, and a couple of years later, the family successfully became British citizens.
A Lasting Generous Legacy
The story of Lord Taverne's kindness did not end there. In 2007, he demonstrated his commitment to community once more. He handed over his parliamentary science communicator award of £500 for the benefit of the children at St Bartholomew’s CE primary school in Brighton, where the letter's author was deputy headteacher. The school put the generous donation to very good use, cementing Lord Taverne's legacy as a man of both principle and profound generosity.
