Campaigners have issued an urgent update on the health of four Palestine Action activists, whose hunger strike has now entered its 56th day while they await trial. The protest, which has drawn international attention, has reportedly led to a severe decline in the protesters' physical condition.
Critical Health Declines Reported
According to supporters monitoring the situation, the health of the remaining strikers has deteriorated seriously. One activist is said to be losing the ability to speak, while another cannot stand up without blacking out. These developments mark a significant escalation in the risks associated with the prolonged protest.
Two other participants previously suspended their strike action after 48 days. Their health had deteriorated to such an extent that they required hospital treatment, highlighting the severe physical toll of the action.
Demands and Government Response
The hunger strikers have presented a set of demands, which include the transfer of one activist and the granting of immediate bail. In a further escalation, they have also initiated legal proceedings against the government.
Responding to the situation, James Timpson, the Minister of State for Prisons, stated that the established processes for managing hunger strikes in custody are robust. He emphasised that no special treatment would be given to the prisoners involved in this protest.
High-Profile Support and Arrest
The protest garnered significant attention this week when climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested at a demonstration in support of the hunger strikers. Her involvement has brought further spotlight onto the campaign and the conditions of the detained activists.
The four individuals are awaiting trial for alleged offences including break-ins or criminal damage related to the activities of the Palestine Action campaign group.
