The University of Washington's women's soccer team suffered a humiliating defeat last week, losing 2-1 to a group of 14-year-old boys from the Crossfire under-14 elite club program. The scrimmage took place on April 30 in Seattle, Washington.
Background on the Huskies
Last season, the Washington Huskies finished as the sixth-ranked team in women's college soccer after an impressive run to the Elite Eight stage of the playoffs. Their 15-3-7 record was the best in program history. They won the Big Ten Women's College Soccer Tournament, earned a No. 4 seed, and upset No. 1 seeds Virginia in the Sweet 16 before being beaten by Duke.
Impact of the Defeat
The loss to Crossfire under-14 boys has fueled arguments against transgender women competing in women's sports. It is not the first time a younger boys' team has beaten an older women's team: in 2017, the US women's national team lost to FC Dallas under-15s, and the Swiss women's national team lost 7-1 to an under-15s team last summer.
The Huskies did not publicly share the scrimmage result, but a spectator with the Instagram handle @woodworksseattle provided score updates and shared a photo of the scoreboard showing Crossfire leading 2-1 in the 90th minute.
