Former AFL Star Fantasia Reveals Injury Hell's Mental Health Toll
Former AFL star Orazio Fantasia has bravely disclosed the devastating mental health impact of the horrific injury run that ultimately ended his professional football career. The veteran player confessed that the relentless physical setbacks left him feeling like 'a s**t boyfriend, a s**t mate and a s**t son' as he struggled to cope with the emotional fallout.
A Career Marred by Physical Setbacks
Fantasia's AFL journey began when he was selected by the Essendon Bombers in the 2013 draft, but his promising career was consistently derailed by significant injuries. Soft-tissue problems and persistent knee issues caused him immense distress over eleven challenging years. These physical limitations restricted him to just 120 matches across his entire professional tenure, a remarkably low number for a player of his talent and longevity in the league.
The former forward, who also had stints at Port Adelaide and Carlton before his career concluded last year, described how the constant battle with injuries took a severe psychological toll. 'Probably (I was) a s**t boyfriend, a s**t mate and a s**t son,' Fantasia revealed during an emotional interview on The Soda Room podcast. 'I think my way of dealing with it – and it definitely is the wrong way – but looking back on it, I went very insular.'
Relationships Deteriorated During Isolation
As the 30-year-old fought desperately to return to the field, his personal relationships with family and friends deteriorated significantly. Fantasia admitted to cutting himself off completely from his support network during his darkest periods. 'Mates would be calling and I just wouldn't respond. Parents would be calling and I wouldn't respond,' he confessed.
The former player clarified that this withdrawal wasn't due to lack of care or affection for his loved ones. 'And it's not because I didn't care or love those people, it was because I just knew it would be the same conversation,' Fantasia explained. 'I couldn't just muster up the courage to deal with those conversations over and over again.'
Reflecting on What Might Have Been
Despite finishing his career with an impressive 157 goals from his 120 games, Fantasia can't help but contemplate what could have been if he had managed to stay fit. He specifically mentioned contemporaries who achieved significant milestones that eluded him due to his injury struggles.
'Guys I got drafted with – when I was at Carlton – "Crippa" (Patrick Cripps) is playing his 200th, 230th, 240th, Zach Merrett reached 250,' Fantasia noted with evident regret. 'Why couldn't I play that many? I wish I could have, but it's my journey at the end of the day.'
Remarkable Longevity Despite Limited Appearances
Remarkably, Fantasia managed to last more than a decade in the AFL system despite averaging just 10 games per season across his entire career. The majority of his professional football was spent at Essendon, where he played 80 games for the Bombers after debuting in 2014 and establishing himself as one of the league's most exciting scoring threats.
After being delisted by Carlton last year, Fantasia will continue playing football at a local level for Adelaide University in 2026. The former star, who became a father when his daughter Sophia was born in January last year, has now taken the courageous step of speaking openly about his mental health battles in hopes that his experience might help others facing similar challenges.
