Barry Hearn Drops Major Hint on World Snooker Championship Venue During Crucible Revamp

Snooker authorities have officially confirmed that the World Snooker Championship will remain at its iconic Sheffield home, the Crucible Theatre, until at least 2045 following a landmark agreement. However, the historic venue is set to undergo a significant refurbishment, which will necessitate a temporary relocation of the prestigious tournament during the works.

China Emerges as a Leading Contender for Temporary Hosting Duties

Barry Hearn, the influential chairman of World Snooker, has publicly suggested that China could be the destination for the championship while the Crucible is being renovated. Although no final decision has been made, Hearn highlighted the immense popularity and commercial potential of snooker in China as a compelling factor.

"We haven't ruled that out yet," Hearn stated. "The numbers out there are absolutely rocking. I don't see that calming down. I see it growing. We are looking at venues."

He expressed a preference for the tournament to remain in the United Kingdom if possible, citing his own reluctance to travel extensively, but acknowledged the global appeal of the sport. "I'd like to be assured that it's only one year away from Sheffield. Because I don't know if you've ever had a builder around that's always a few days late. Well, I don't want it to be too many years late," Hearn added, emphasising the uncertainty surrounding construction timelines.

Alternative UK Venues and International Ambitions

Previously, venues such as Alexandra Palace in London and Manchester Central have been considered as potential temporary hosts within the UK. Hearn has also expressed a long-standing interest in hosting a major tournament in Qatar, though he noted that progress has been slow on that front.

"It's been on the card for two years. These people don't rush, do they? We've had a deal in place. The Qataris own 13 per cent of Matchroom through Pitch International. They seem nice but they don't seem to be doing much," Hearn remarked, indicating that Chinese venues might currently hold a stronger position in discussions.

Political Endorsement for Sheffield's Sporting Heritage

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer recently voiced his support for the Crucible retaining the World Snooker Championship, linking it to the UK's broader cultural and sporting legacy. "We have a deep cultural and sporting heritage here in the UK - sport, art and culture are the very best of us," Starmer said.

He continued, "I had the pleasure of recently visiting Sheffield, the home of the oldest football club in the world, to encourage partners to support a major redevelopment of the iconic Crucible Theatre to keep sport and culture thriving in this city. I'm delighted with today's confirmation that the theatre and the city will stay host to the famous World Snooker Championships for many years to come."

Immediate Tournament Schedule and Future Implications

This year's World Snooker Championship is scheduled to run from April 18 to May 4, with qualifying rounds commencing shortly. The confirmation of the Crucible's long-term future provides stability for the sport, while the temporary move during refurbishment opens a window for international expansion, with China now a prominent candidate to showcase the championship on a global stage.
