Bruin, a four-year-old clumber spaniel, has triumphed as the best in show winner at the prestigious Crufts dog contest, held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Owner Lee Cox expressed overwhelming joy, describing Bruin as "a dog of a lifetime" and celebrating the victory as a milestone for the breed.
A Momentous Victory for the Clumber Spaniel Breed
Lee Cox, the proud owner, was met with roaring cheers from the audience as Bruin claimed the crown. "It's just amazing," Cox remarked. "I can't believe it. It's just wonderful for this breed. For the first time in my life, I'm speechless." He added, "He's a dog of a lifetime ... he's just wonderful. He's a bit of a diva, a bit like me, he likes to have his own way. He's very chilled but would never, ever let me down."
The Rigorous Judging Process at Crufts
The Crufts competition, which ran from Thursday to Sunday, saw an estimated 18,600 dogs participate from across the UK and internationally. The best in show category is awarded by expert judges, who evaluate the winning dogs from seven group categories: working, pastoral, terrier, hound, toy, utility, and gundog. The top dog is determined based on health, structure, movement, and temperament.
This year, the reserve best in show was Meghan, a petit basset griffon vendéen. Other notable contenders included Viking, a Tibetan mastiff and winner of the working group, and Hazel, a Welsh corgi who secured the pastoral group. Dublin, a cavalier King Charles spaniel, topped the toy dog category, while Freddie the lakeland terrier won the veteran dog competition.
Historical Context and Previous Winners
Last year's best in show winner was Miuccia, a whippet from Venice, who beat nearly 18,000 dogs, marking the first time an Italian dog won the show. Crufts, founded in 1891 by Charles Cruft, has grown into one of the world's largest dog shows, continuing operations even during the first and second world wars. The show was inspired by Cruft's role as general manager for a dog biscuit manufacturer, which involved global travel to dog shows.
Additional Competitions and Events at Crufts
Beyond breed judging and the top dog competition, Crufts features a variety of other events. These include an agility course, an obedience contest, and a relay race known as flyball. There is also a dance competition where dogs and handlers perform choreographed routines to music, as well as a competition for young dog lovers, highlighting the event's broad appeal.
The 2026 edition concluded with Bruin's victory, reinforcing Crufts' status as a premier global showcase for canine excellence and celebration.
