A four-year-old Clumber spaniel named Bruin has been crowned best in show at Crufts 2026, triumphing over 18,000 dogs from across the globe during the four-day event at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
Historic Victory for the Breed
Bruin, handled by owner Lee Cox, secured the prestigious title on Sunday, marking a significant milestone for the Clumber spaniel breed. The victory came after Bruin had already won the Gundog group earlier in the show, demonstrating consistent excellence throughout the competition.
Judging and Competition
Judge Tamas Jakkel selected Bruin as the overall winner, with the spaniel outperforming the champions from six other groups to claim the trophy. The reserve dog was Meghan, a four-year-old petit basset griffon vendeen from Croatia, who had earlier won the Hound group.
Owner's Emotional Reaction
Lee Cox expressed overwhelming joy and disbelief at Bruin's achievement. "It's just amazing, I mean, what can I say? I can't believe it. Thank you so much," he said. "It's just wonderful for this breed. You know, it's just a... for the first time in my life, I'm speechless."
Cox described Bruin as a "dog of a lifetime" and a "walking cartoon character in a fluffy white coat." He highlighted their strong bond, noting, "He's very, very special. I absolutely adore him. And he adores me." In a light-hearted moment, Cox joked that Bruin wanted to eat the microphone, adding, "he's just wonderful."
Bruin's Personality
When asked about Bruin's character, Cox revealed, "Bit of a diva, a bit like me really, likes his own way, very chilled, but will never, ever let me down. Never lets me down." This insight into Bruin's temperament underscores the unique connection between handler and dog that contributed to their success.
The victory at Crufts 2026 not only celebrates Bruin's individual excellence but also brings renewed attention to the Clumber spaniel breed, showcasing their capabilities on one of the world's most prominent canine stages.
