Doctor Windsurfer Fatally Mauled by Shark as Family Watches from Beach
Doctor Windsurfer Killed in Shark Attack as Family Watches

A 55-year-old doctor has been tragically killed in a brutal shark attack while windsurfing off the coast of New Caledonia, with his horrified family forced to watch the incident unfold from the beach. The fatal mauling occurred on a popular beach near the capital, Nouméa, in this French territory located in the South Pacific, east of Australia.

Horrific Scene Unfolds in Front of Family

The doctor was catching waves when he was suddenly seen thrashing violently in the water. A shark had ambushed him, clamping its razor-sharp teeth into his arms and legs and throwing him around with its powerful jaws. His family looked on in horror from the shore, unable to intervene as the attack progressed.

Rescue Efforts Prove Too Late

Local firefighters reported that the doctor's body was later found floating in a nearby lagoon by sailors out on their boats on Sunday afternoon. The sailors pulled him from the water and attempted to revive him, but their efforts were in vain. Medics confirmed he was dead shortly after arriving at the scene, according to Nouvelle-Calédonie Prévention Requin (New Caledonia Shark Prevention).

Officials stated that the wounds to his right forearm, leg, and left tibia were consistent with a shark attack. His windsurfing board was also recovered with a large chunk missing, appearing to be the result of a shark bite, as reported by The Sun.

Beach Evacuated and Investigation Launched

More than a dozen police officers rushed to the horrifying scene to protect other beachgoers. They closed the sands while specialist teams were dispatched to provide support to the grief-stricken victim's family, according to local police. A post-mortem examination is currently underway to officially confirm the cause of death.

New Caledonia: A Known Shark Hotspot

The beach near Nouméa was described as 'particularly busy' over the weekend, despite the area often being labeled a shark hotspot. This tragic incident follows another serious shark attack just days earlier, where a 49-year-old swimmer was seriously injured.

Nouvelle-Calédonie Prévention Requin released a statement confirming: 'A man lost his life after a shark attack, in the area of the Château Royal beach, in Nouméa. Late Sunday afternoon, rescue teams were at the scene and the beach was evacuated.'

History of Fatal Attacks in the Region

New Caledonia has witnessed several fatal shark attacks in recent years. As recently as 2023, a 59-year-old Australian tourist was killed by a shark in New Caledonian waters after being mauled multiple times on his arms and legs. Horrifying CCTV footage captured that attack, showing the man splashing around during the deadly encounter.

In that previous incident, jet skiers raced to save him, but he had already sustained injuries too severe for emergency services to save him on the beach.

Official Warnings and Safety Advice

Officials are acutely aware of the dangers posed by sharks in the region. The territory's tourism board website carries explicit warnings about shark risks. It advises visitors to avoid swimming at certain times of day, such as dawn, dusk, or after heavy rainfall, when water visibility is low and sharks are more likely to be hunting.

The website also strongly advises against swimming or engaging in watersports alone, noting that extreme movements can attract predators. Nouméa prosecutor Yves Dupas commented on the latest attack, stating: 'We do not yet know how the attack unfolded. We are trying to determine the circumstances.'

This tragic event underscores the persistent risks in what is otherwise considered a holiday paradise, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and adherence to safety protocols in shark-prone waters.
