Former Chelsea Academy Star Clinton Mola Told to 'Grow Up' by Judge Over Driving Offences
A judge has delivered a stern rebuke to a former Chelsea youth prodigy, telling him to 'grow up' after he claimed he was unaware he needed insurance to drive and had been previously banned. Clinton Mola, 25, who progressed through the Blues' academy and now plays as a midfielder for Bristol Rovers, was stopped by police while driving an Audi SQ8 SUV on November 28, 2025 in Southwark, London.
Ignorance of the Law No Excuse, Says Magistrate
Mola had been banned from driving for two years just four months prior to this incident, but he asserted in court that he was completely unaware of this disqualification or the requirement to have insurance. Defending the footballer, Fadi Daoud explained to the court that much of Mola's driving experience had been with vehicles provided by sponsors during his time playing for VfB Stuttgart in Germany.
'While he played for Stuttgart, he had a Mercedes as part of his sponsorship deal,' Mr. Daoud stated. 'He had insurance that came with the vehicle, not the driver. He did not understand that in the UK you insure the person, not the car. He's a very young man, 24 at the time. He works six days a week, he plays football on the seventh day. He got it wrong because he was so busy. He has the responsibility of family.'
Mr. Daoud emphasised that there was 'some ignorance on his part, not wilful,' noting Mola's clean lifestyle and good family background, and requested that his client not be given community service due to his demanding schedule.
Magistrate's Firm Warning and Sentencing
Magistrate Jeffrey Manson addressed Mola directly, stating: 'You were driving four months into a 24-month ban, whether you knew about it or not that’s a short period within the ban. At the time whether you knew about it or not you had your partner and child in the car and you weren’t insured. If anything had happened - if you’d hit somebody else - they’d have had no recourse to physiotherapy or anything else.'
He continued: 'We are going to deal with this by way of a fine, we’re not going to give you unpaid work, we’ve heard what’s been said.' Mola was subsequently banned from driving for three years for driving without insurance and ordered to pay £2,238, including a £1,538 fine and court costs.
Mr Manson added a pointed message: ‘You are a role model for people, you can’t just say I’m too busy I didn’t know about it. That just is not an excuse. Really, you need to start to grow up, you have a child now, people look up to you for what you do. It’s really important that you take this message home today. People look up to you, so you need to be better. Driving whilst disqualified is a very serious offence for which we regularly send people to prison.'
In a concluding remark, the magistrate said: ‘In the nicest possible way we hope never to see you again - except on television.’
Mola's Football Career Background
Clinton Mola has made 34 appearances this season for Bristol Rovers after joining the club from Reading in 2024. Having progressed through the prestigious Chelsea academy, he joined Stuttgart in 2020 and spent three years playing in the Bundesliga before signing for Blackburn Rovers on loan and then Reading on a permanent deal. The midfielder also represented England Under-21s, making one appearance for the development side in 2021.
This case highlights the legal responsibilities that come with public visibility, as the court emphasised the need for professional athletes to set a positive example and adhere strictly to road safety laws, regardless of their busy schedules or past experiences abroad.
