Derrick Clark, a former professional football player who spent time with the Denver Broncos and excelled in other leagues, has passed away at the age of 54. His death was initially announced by his alma mater, Evangel University in Missouri, last month, but the news gained wider circulation only this week. No cause of death has been disclosed at this time.
Evangel University Legacy and Hall of Fame Induction
Clark remains the all-time leading rusher in the history of Evangel football, an NAIA program. He transferred from Florida State and helped lead the team to a postseason berth in 1993. In a statement, Evangel Athletics expressed deep sorrow, noting, 'Evangel Athletics mourns the loss of Hall of Fame football player, Derrick Clark. Derrick was a member of the 1992 and 1993 Evangel Football teams, where he became the all-time leading rusher in school history in just two seasons.'
The two-time NAIA All-American was honored with induction into the Evangel Hall of Fame in the fall of 2021. The university extended its condolences, stating, 'Our prayers are with the Clark family, during this time of loss and mourning.'
Notable Collegiate and Professional Career Highlights
Clark's standout performance came during a 1993 game against Missouri Valley, where he rushed for an impressive 300 yards and scored four touchdowns. He signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 1994, a season that proved challenging for the team. Despite limited action over the first 14 weeks, Clark managed to score three touchdowns in his final two appearances of that year.
Although his NFL tenure was brief, Clark continued his football career in other professional leagues. He had several stints on NFL practice squads but found significant success in NFL Europe, scoring 21 touchdowns over five seasons with the Rhein Fire. He contributed to Rhein's victory in the 1998 World Bowl and later played for the Orlando Rage in the XFL.
Post-Retirement Involvement and Tributes
After retiring from active play, Clark remained deeply involved in football. He co-owned the Daytona Beach Broncos, a semi-professional team, and participated in a football training and mentorship program called Xtreme Leverage. His dedication to the sport and community was widely recognized.
Former Evangel football coach Keith Barefield paid tribute on social media, posting, 'Mourning the loss of one of the greatest players I ever coached. Two-time All American, Hall of Famer Evangel Football Derrick Clark. Grateful for his friendship & proud of the Godly man he grew to be. A true "Crusader." You will be missed!'
Derrick Clark's legacy as a record-setting collegiate athlete, a determined professional player, and a committed mentor continues to resonate within the football community.
