Former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button faced an unexpected defeat in a high-speed scanning competition against supermarket cashiers, losing decisively to 29-year-old Rofiat Adeleke. The event, dubbed the 'Doritos Scan Grand Prix', tested participants' speed and precision as they scanned a conveyor belt full of items, with Adeleke emerging victorious.
Blistering Victory for Supermarket Professional
Rofiat Adeleke, a seasoned cashier, completed the scanning task in a remarkable 43.22 seconds, outpacing Button by a full 6.46 seconds. Her flawless technique and experience proved superior to Button's racing-honed reflexes, securing her the title of the first-ever Doritos Scan Grand Prix winner. As her prize, Adeleke won tickets to this summer's Formula 1 Pirelli British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Button's Humble Defeat
Jenson Button, partnering with Doritos as the official savoury snack of Formula 1, acknowledged the challenge's difficulty. "My whole life I have tried to be as fast as possible, but this was a new challenge entirely," Button said. "I thought I had the rhythm down, but Rofiat's technique was flawless." He added, "It turns out that whether you're taking Silverstone's Copse Corner at 180mph or scanning a bag of Doritos Golden Sriracha, every millisecond counts."
The loss was compounded as two other contestants, Tesco workers Bobby-Lee Boggins, 21, and Lucy Spurr, 19, also beat Button's time. This left the F1 champion off the podium entirely, as he struggled with items on his conveyor belt during the intense showdown.
Event Hosting and Commentary
The Scan Grand Prix was hosted by Matt and Tommy, creators behind the popular F1 YouTube channel P1, who provided expert commentary as items flew across the scanners. Their lively narration added to the event's high-octane atmosphere, reminiscent of a Formula 1 race.
Adeleke's Excitement and Fandom
Rofiat Adeleke expressed her astonishment at competing against Button. "I've seen Jenson on the podium before, but it's crazy to compete with him here in my world," she said. "My partner and I are huge Formula 1 fans, and I can't wait to tell him we'll be going to Silverstone this summer - he'll be absolutely over the moon."
Doritos 'Race to Win' Competition
The stunt coincides with Doritos' ongoing 'Race to Win' on-pack competition, offering consumers chances to win prizes. Participants can choose between two race options: race one provides instant-win merchandise opportunities every hour, while race two enters them into a grand prize draw for tickets to the British Grand Prix.
This unique marketing event highlights the intersection of sports celebrity and everyday skills, demonstrating that speed on the track doesn't always translate to speed at the checkout. The Doritos Scan Grand Prix has captured public attention, blending entertainment with promotional activations in a memorable showdown.
