The event, captured in videos shared on social media, showed Patel enthusiastically participating in the festivities, which included drinking beer and spraying it around the room.
Celebration Amid Security Concerns
While Patel was in Milan, a separate security incident unfolded in the United States. The U.S. Secret Service shot and killed an armed man who had driven into Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump's resort in Florida. Hours later, as the hockey game against Canada went into overtime, Patel posted on X that the FBI was "dedicating all necessary resources in the investigation."
In the locker room, one of the players draped his gold medal around Patel's neck, and he joined the team in jumping up and down. However, the celebration drew criticism from some quarters. Xochitl Hinojosa, spokeswoman for former Attorney General Merrick Garland, commented on X, "There was a threat at the president’s residence at MAL, Americans in Mexico are facing major threats by cartel members, Nancy Guthrie is still missing, and our FBI Director thinks he’s a frat bro?!"
Patel's Defense of His Trip
Patel responded to the backlash by stating he was "extremely humbled when my friends, the newly minted Gold Medal winners on Team USA, invited me into the locker room to celebrate this historic moment with the boys." He had previously defended his official trip to Italy, explaining that he was there to meet with Italian law enforcement officials and Americans assisting with Olympic security.
This week, Patel posted pictures of his visit to the Milan Joint Operations Center, which he said was responsible for protecting the security of American athletes and all visitors to the Winter Games. He also shared a photo of his meeting with the U.S. ambassador to Italy, emphasizing the professional nature of his visit.
The incident highlights the balancing act between official duties and public perception, as Patel's celebratory moment with the hockey team sparked debate over priorities during ongoing security threats.
