Flavor Flav to Host Las Vegas Event Honouring US Women's Olympic Ice Hockey Team
Flavor Flav Hosts Vegas Event for US Women's Olympic Hockey

In a vibrant celebration of female athletic achievement, legendary rapper Flavor Flav has announced he will host a special Las Vegas event this July to honour the triumphant US women's ice hockey team. The team secured a dramatic gold medal at the recent Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, defeating Canada in an overtime thriller.

A Weekend of Recognition and Celebration

The Hall of Fame artist, a founding member of the iconic hip hop group Public Enemy, revealed on social media platform X that the "She Got Game" weekend will take place from 16 to 19 July. This event is organised in partnership with MGM Resorts and aims to celebrate not only the women's hockey team but all female Olympian and Paralympian accomplishments.

Longstanding Support for Women's Sports

The 66-year-old rapper is a well-known advocate for women's sports. His commitment extends beyond this event, as he has also launched a dedicated GoFundMe campaign to provide financial support for US women's Olympic medallists. "Many of y'all asked how you can support and donate to our female athletes and the celebrations. So I created a Go Fund Me. I'm hopeful this can have an impact beyond the weekend and help those that represent the best of the US," Flav wrote in his announcement.

Flavor Flav's involvement in Olympic sports is not new. He served as the official hype man for the US bobsleigh and skeleton teams during the Milano Cortina Games and previously supported the women's water polo team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Invitation Follows Political Snub

This celebratory invitation comes shortly after the women's ice hockey team declined an invitation to attend former President Donald Trump's State of the Union address. USA Hockey cited logistical and travel issues as reasons for politely refusing the offer, which was extended during a locker room call congratulating the men's team on their own gold medal victory.

During that call, Trump remarked, "We're going to have to bring the women's team, you do know that," later joking he would "probably be impeached" if he didn't extend the invitation. This reference was notably included in the formal email Flavor Flav shared, which he said was sent to the players, offering them a Las Vegas trip for "a real celebration" complete with dinners and shows.

Details and Team Attendance

While the rapper has extended this lavish invitation to the full 23-strong squad, it remains unclear how many players will attend. Reuters sought comment from USA Hockey regarding the team's participation, but the organisation did not immediately respond. The event promises to be a significant moment of recognition for the athletes, highlighting their historic victory and broader contributions to women's sports.

Flavor Flav's initiative underscores a growing movement to celebrate and support female athletes, providing them with platforms and resources often reserved for their male counterparts. This Las Vegas weekend is set to be a landmark event in the ongoing effort to elevate women's sports on a national stage.
