James Garner Celebrates Breakthrough Season with First England Call-Up
James Garner, the Everton midfielder, has expressed his satisfaction with what he describes as a defining year in his career, culminating in his first call-up to the England national team. The 25-year-old could make his international debut in the upcoming matches against Uruguay on Friday or Japan on Tuesday, offering a final opportunity to impress manager Thomas Tuchel before the World Cup squad selection.
Overcoming Adversity to Shine at Everton
Garner revealed that he set a personal goal at the start of the season to demonstrate his capabilities after facing challenges at Everton. "I told myself at the start of the season that this season has to be the season that I can show everyone what I can do, and I think so far I have done," he said. His journey has been marked by resilience, recovering from two serious back injuries and navigating Everton's struggles in the relegation zone over the past three years.
"With a year left on my contract as well, I knew that I had to show everybody what I'm really about and showcase all my talents," Garner added, highlighting the fresh start under a new manager and stadium this season. His performances have been instrumental in Everton's current eighth-place standing in the Premier League, where he has been a key player for manager David Moyes.
Versatility and Youth Success Boosting England Prospects
Primarily a central midfielder, Garner has also proven his adaptability by playing as a right-back when needed and excelling as a set-piece specialist. This versatility could enhance his chances as Tuchel finalizes the 26-man squad for the World Cup. Garner's international pedigree includes extensive experience at youth levels, from under-17s to under-21s, and he was part of the England team that won the Under-21 European Championship in 2023, alongside teammates like James Trafford and Cole Palmer, who are also in the current squad.
"I just want to go that one step further now and hopefully win a trophy for the first team as well," Garner stated, expressing his ambition to build on past successes.
Personal Milestones and Family Pride
Garner received the call-up news in a phone call from Tuchel last week, keeping it private for a day before sharing it with his family. His father, a Liverpool supporter from Thailand, was particularly proud. "My dad's very proud. Phoning him this time about England rather than a club that he doesn't support is very nice, and it was a very nice call as well," Garner shared, hoping his father can attend the matches at Wembley.
Having progressed through Manchester United's academy before joining Everton, Garner navigates split loyalties due to his family's Liverpool fandom. His journey underscores a year of personal and professional growth, positioning him as a promising contender for England's future campaigns.
