Greek Prosecutors Demand Premier League Punishment for Harry Maguire
The prosecutors responsible for securing Harry Maguire's conviction in Greece have issued a formal demand for the Manchester United defender to be disciplined by the Premier League and other football governing bodies. This call comes after Maguire was handed a 15-month suspended sentence by the Greek Criminal Appeal Court on the island of Syros on Wednesday.
Conviction and Sentencing Details
Maguire was found guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery related to an incident that occurred six years ago during a family holiday in Mykonos. The retrial resulted in a conviction by a 2-1 majority among three judges. Maguire has strongly criticised the trial process, labelling it "a shambles" and announcing his intention to appeal to the Greek Supreme Court.
Prosecutor's Statement and Demands
Ioannis Paradissis, the lawyer representing the police officers who alleged they were injured while arresting Maguire, has publicly condemned the player for failing to apologise. In a bold move, Paradissis called for Maguire to face additional punishment from football authorities.
Paradissis stated: "During the hearing, the police officers who were the victims in this case attended expecting, at minimum, an apology from the accused—an elementary gesture of respect toward individuals who were simply performing their lawful duty. No such apology was offered, a stance that speaks volumes about his character."
He emphasised that it is unacceptable for police officers to suffer bodily harm while executing their duties, even if classified as 'light bodily injury' by the court. Paradissis urged sporting bodies to examine the matter promptly and impose necessary sanctions, arguing that it is incompatible with sport's values for a player with a criminal record for violence to remain a Premier League figure and role model for young fans globally.
Legal Proceedings and Maguire's Response
The case stems from a brawl in Mykonos nearly six years ago, which initially led to a conviction for aggravated assault and a 21-month suspended sentence—both overturned on appeal. Notably, Maguire declined offers to settle the case out of court for £43,500, even during a recess in Wednesday's hearing.
Despite the conviction, Maguire did not attend court in person and played for Manchester United in their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle at St James' Park on Wednesday night. Paradissis insisted that the conviction will stand regardless of any further appeals, as a cassation appeal only addresses points of law and does not erase the criminal record established by the appellate court.
Potential Implications
While no travel restrictions were imposed by the Syros court, it remains unclear whether Maguire's conviction could affect his ability to obtain a US visa if selected for England's World Cup squad this summer. As Maguire turns 33, the case continues to unfold, with football authorities now under pressure to respond to the prosecutors' demands for disciplinary action.
