Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is set to receive the United States' highest civilian honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in recognition of his heroic performance that led the US men's hockey team to a gold medal victory at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
State of the Union Announcement
During the State of the Union Address on Tuesday evening, President Donald Trump brought members of the triumphant US men's hockey team before Congress, just days after their famous 2-1 victory over Canada in the gold medal game. As lawmakers stood and applauded, Trump revealed the special award for Hellebuyck.
Trump's Declaration to Congress
President Trump explained that during the team's earlier visit to the White House, he consulted with the squad before making his decision. 'The members of this hockey squad will be very happy to hear that, based on their vote, and my vote, and in this case my vote was more important, that I will soon be presenting Connor with our highest civilian honor ... the Presidential Medal of Freedom,' Trump told the session of Congress. Hellebuyck responded by holding his hand to his heart as members of the House and Senate gave him a standing ovation.
Presidential Medal of Freedom Criteria
The Presidential Medal of Freedom can be awarded to any person recommended to the President or selected by the President upon his own initiative. According to White House guidelines, the honour is presented to individuals who advance the national interests of the United States, promote world peace, or contribute to American cultural endeavours. Notably, recipients do not need to be American citizens to qualify for the award.
