Iran has officially withdrawn from the upcoming World Cup, as confirmed by the nation's sports minister, Ahmad Donyamal, amidst escalating tensions and conflict with the tournament's host country, the United States. This decision follows a series of wide-ranging strikes launched by the US and Israel against Iran late last month, which resulted in the death of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.
No Conditions for Participation
In a televised interview broadcast on Wednesday via RTE, Donyamal stated, 'Since this corrupt government assassinated our leader, we have no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup.' He elaborated on the dire circumstances, noting that Iran has faced two forced wars within eight or nine months, leading to the deaths of several thousand citizens. 'Therefore, we definitely have no possibility of participating in this way,' he added, underscoring the nation's stance against what it perceives as malicious measures by the US.
Escalation of Conflict
The conflict intensified after the initial strikes on February 28, which targeted Iran and resulted in the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei. In retaliation, Iranian forces have launched strikes on US bases located in several neighbouring countries, including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, and Kuwait.
