Former NRL star turned heavyweight boxer Jarrod Wallace has publicly credited his wife Shannon for delivering the crucial "spray" that rescued him from a profound personal crisis following his retirement from professional rugby league. The 34-year-old forward, who represented Queensland in six State of Origin matches, found himself adrift and struggling with his identity after hanging up his boots in 2024, despite securing media roles with SEN and Triple M radio networks.
A Descent into Darkness and a Weighty Struggle
Wallace's transition from the structured world of professional sport proved far more challenging than anticipated. At his lowest point, the athlete saw his weight skyrocket beyond 130 kilograms, a physical manifestation of his internal turmoil. "I don't know if it was depression, but it was definitely a dark spot," Wallace confessed in an interview with Code Sports. "I just turned into a shell of a person."
The Turning Point: A Wife's Tough Love
The pivotal moment arrived when Shannon Wallace confronted her husband with brutal honesty. "I remember my missus spraying me, saying, 'You're so much better than this'," Wallace recalled. Initially defensive and feeling "picked on," he eventually recognized her intervention as the catalyst he desperately needed. This confrontation propelled him to seek out trainer Fidel Tukel and commit to a boxing comeback, despite initial skepticism about his prospects against formidable opponent Nelson Asofa-Solomona.
Redemption in the Ring: A High-Stakes Rematch
Wallace's first professional boxing bout against Asofa-Solomona, nicknamed 'Big Nasty', ended in a third-round TKO defeat on the Battle of the Reef card in Townsville during late 2023. Now, with renewed purpose, Wallace is preparing for a highly anticipated rematch scheduled for Easter Sunday, April 5th, in Wollongong as part of the Tim Tszyu undercard at the WIN Entertainment Centre.
In the intense pre-fight buildup, Wallace has declared he is living "rent-free" in his opponent's head, psychologically leveraging a memorable try he scored against Asofa-Solomona's Melbourne Storm back in 2019. This confidence marks a stark contrast to the man who once felt utterly lost after football.
Past Shadows and Present Happiness
Wallace's journey intersects with complex personal history. His previous marriage to model and television presenter Courtney Thorpe ended amidst allegations of infidelity following the traumatic premature birth of their daughter, Kennedy Grace, in August 2019. Thorpe has spoken publicly about gaining 35 kilograms, suffering post-natal depression, and pleading with Wallace not to cheat as she battled anxiety. Wallace has consistently denied these allegations.
Today, Wallace attributes his current happiness and stability squarely to his wife Shannon. "She made me the happiest I have ever been," he stated, framing his boxing comeback not just as a sporting challenge, but as a testament to personal redemption and the transformative power of honest, difficult conversations within a supportive partnership.
