Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce made certain his famous fiancée, pop sensation Taylor Swift, did not miss a single moment of the United States men's hockey team's historic gold medal triumph. Team USA secured a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against arch-rivals Canada at the Winter Olympics in Milan on Sunday, claiming their first men's hockey gold since the legendary "Miracle on Ice" in 1980.
Early Morning Thrills in New York
With the highly anticipated clash scheduled just hours before the Closing Ceremony, millions of North American fans awoke early for the 8:10 AM Eastern Time puck drop. While the dawn start left some supporters disgruntled, Kelce was more than willing to rise from bed—and bring Swift along for the ride. The NFL tight end disclosed on the latest episode of his New Heights podcast that he and the global music icon watched "the entire game" together from New York.
"It's just so f***ing epic, man," Kelce enthusiastically told his older brother, Jason Kelce, who had attended the Winter Olympics with his wife, Kylie. "From the first drop of the puck that game was just non-stop action. It had me on the edge of my seat at 8:05 in the morning. Loved every minute of it man."
A Birthday Celebration Fit for a Patriarch
The three-time Super Bowl champion also noted that Sunday coincided with their father Ed Kelce's birthday. Both brothers agreed there was no "more fitting" way to honour the family patriarch than by witnessing Team USA capture gold. "So we gave him a shout and spoke to him during the game," Travis added, highlighting the familial connection to the monumental sporting achievement.
Swift's Sports Transformation
Swift has previously credited her NFL beau for converting her into a dedicated sports enthusiast. During her long-awaited debut on the New Heights podcast last summer, the singer confessed her football knowledge was virtually non-existent when they first met. She praised Kelce for being "so non-judgmental about people" and not minding her initial lack of sports savvy.
"Jason, on our first date, I legitimately asked him what it was like when the Chiefs played the Eagles in the Super Bowl (in February 2023) and he looked across the field, across the line of scrimmage, and saw his brother standing five feet in front of him on the field," Swift shared, prompting laughter from both Travis and Jason, who clarified the scenario was impossible.
"And he didn't even look at me... I now know what an insane question that was. He was like: 'Actually I'm on the offense and my brother is the offense and I'm only on the field at the same time as the defense.' I thought everyone was out there at the same time," Swift recounted, illustrating her early learning curve.
From Novice to Seasoned Spectator
Now, however, the "Opalite" hitmaker has evolved into a seasoned veteran at sporting events. She has attended two of the last three Super Bowls to support Kelce, whose Chiefs clinched their second consecutive title in 2024 before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles last year. The couple has also enjoyed date nights at a New York Yankees baseball game and Game 4 of the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers last season.
Golden Moments for USA Hockey
The USA men's dramatic gold-medal victory over bitter rival Canada occurred mere days after the American women's team topped the podium in Milan in a similarly nail-biting fashion. Kelce did not specify whether he and his A-list fiancée also watched the women's clash between the United States and Canada.
Nevertheless, both Travis and Jason Kelce praised the women's champions on their podcast, sending a heartfelt message to Laila Edwards. The fellow Cleveland Heights native, whose family Travis had assisted in sending to Milan, received special recognition.
"I'll let you have [the title] because you're the only one to have gold, so a little tip of the cap to you Laila," Kelce stated after the hockey star humorously dubbed herself "the best athlete to come out of Cleveland Heights." He added, "That was awesome to see you go and get it."
Jason echoed the sentiment, saying, "She was very, very good throughout the Olympics. One of the things after talking to her, you realize she is from the Heights, man. There's just this humbleness but also she's a great person... Just so proud of all of them. It's an incredible moment to win a gold medal."
The historic golden goal, scored by Jack Hughes, sealed a monumental victory for Team USA, capping an unforgettable Winter Olympics for American hockey and providing a memorable morning of viewing for one of the world's most famous couples.
