Ilona Löwen, the wife of St. Louis City SC midfielder Eduard Löwen, has tragically died at the age of 28 after a prolonged and courageous battle with brain cancer. The club officially confirmed her passing in a heartfelt statement released on social media platforms, expressing deep sorrow and solidarity with the grieving family.
Club Statement and Community Support
The club's statement read, "We grieve alongside Edu and all those impacted by this loss and ask the CITY community to keep them in your prayers during this difficult time. Ilona was a beautiful example of love, humility, and kindness and will be deeply missed." This announcement has prompted an outpouring of support from fans and the wider football community, highlighting the profound impact of her loss.
Ilona's Medical Journey and Diagnosis
Ilona's health struggles began in 2024 when she experienced severe headaches, which led to the discovery of a benign brain tumour. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries in an effort to combat the condition, doctors later delivered the devastating news that the cancer had progressed to an incurable Stage 4. Her battle spanned two years, marked by resilience and the unwavering support of her husband and loved ones.
Eduard Löwen's Commitment to Family
Eduard Löwen, the 29-year-old German midfielder, has not featured for St. Louis City SC this season, prioritizing his wife's care during her illness. He spoke openly about his dedication at the club's first match, emphasizing his role as a husband. "We get a lot of support from family, from friends, but sometimes there are just moments and things that only I can take care of and I want to take care of because, obviously, I'm the husband," he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "There are just certain responsibilities that sometimes force me or also I want to step away and take care of her. Sometimes there are just unexpected things that happen."
Team Solidarity and Career Background
In a touching show of solidarity, his St. Louis City teammates held up his No. 10 jersey before a match against Charlotte FC in February, demonstrating their support for the midfielder during this challenging period. Eduard Löwen, who played professionally in his native Germany before signing with St. Louis City in 2022, has made significant contributions to the team, with 17 goals and nine assists in 71 regular-season MLS matches, including 62 starts.
The football world mourns the loss of Ilona Löwen, remembering her as a symbol of strength and kindness, while her husband's absence from the pitch underscores the personal sacrifices made in the face of such profound adversity.
