Lerone Murphy Confident UFC London Winner Secures Title Shot
Manchester's Lerone Murphy is adamant that the victor of his UFC London main event clash with Movsar Evloev will earn a direct shot at the featherweight championship, currently held by Alexander Volkanovski. The 34-year-old fighter, who has been steadily ascending the 145lb rankings, believes this weekend's headline bout at UFC London should unequivocally determine the next title challenger.
Murphy's Rise and Title Ambitions
Murphy catapulted onto the global MMA stage with a spectacular spinning back elbow knockout of Aaron Pico at UFC 319 last August, a performance that many fans thought would immediately position him for a title fight. However, the UFC opted to schedule a rematch between Volkanovski and Diego Lopes, which the Australian champion dominated decisively last month. Now, with the featherweight division moving forward, Murphy sees his matchup with Evloev as the critical next step.
"The winner of me and Mosvar fights for the title and it shouldn't be any other way," Murphy declared at the UFC London media day on Thursday. He emphasized the importance of delivering an undeniable performance to secure the opportunity, stating, "I want it to be undeniable so they can't not give me the shot."
Dismissing Doubts and Rival Claims
Despite not being officially confirmed as a number one contender fight by the UFC, Murphy remains unfazed by suggestions from other top contenders, such as Jean Silva, who has expressed readiness to face Volkanovski. Murphy pointed out Silva's recent record, noting, "Well who knows? [Silva's] 1-1 in his last two." He reiterated his belief that the London main event should take precedence in the title picture.
Many analysts anticipate that Evloev's formidable wrestling style could dominate the fight, but Murphy has dismissed these concerns. "It's not going to stay on the canvas for five rounds," he asserted. "He's going to try, but I believe I can get up against anybody. So yeah, he's probably going to take me down. So what? I'll be back up. I'll be wearing down his energy, and I'll be putting the pressure on."
Personal Milestones and Future Goals
For Murphy, headlining UFC London represents a significant personal achievement. "It's always been on the bucket list of fighting in London. Especially headlining, that was the goal, and we're ticking that off now," he shared. When asked about his future aspirations, Murphy did not hold back, outlining a clear path forward.
"In this sport, after that [headlining London] is the title, then I want to bring it back to Manchester," he added. "They're the main ones for me really and obviously fighting Volkanovski, just because he's one of the greatest of all time at my weight division." This statement underscores his dual focus on achieving championship glory and honoring his hometown roots.
As UFC London approaches, all eyes will be on Murphy and Evloev to see if their clash lives up to the hype and indeed sets the stage for a title showdown with Alexander Volkanovski. The outcome could reshape the featherweight landscape, with Murphy poised to make his mark on the sport's highest level.
