Women's NCAA Tournament Bracket Set for Sunday Night Reveal with Top Seeds in Focus
The women's NCAA Tournament bracket will be unveiled on Sunday night, with projections indicating that UConn, UCLA, Texas, and South Carolina are poised to secure the coveted No. 1 seeds. This announcement marks a pivotal moment in the college basketball season, setting the stage for the highly anticipated March Madness competition.
Projected Top Seeds and Their Championship Aspirations
UConn enters the tournament with an undefeated record, aiming for six more victories to achieve the seventh perfect season in the school's illustrious history. A championship win would also make them the first repeat titleholders since their own four-year dynasty from 2013 to 2016.
UCLA has been dominant, riding a 25-game winning streak with their only loss this season coming against Texas on a neutral court. After reaching the Final Four last year only to fall to UConn, the Bruins, led by coach Cori Close and star center Lauren Betts, are determined to capture the school's first NCAA championship and the Big Ten's first since 1999.
Texas (31-3) heads into the tournament on a high note after defeating South Carolina to claim the SEC Tournament title. The Longhorns have bested the Gamecocks in two of their three meetings this season, bolstering their confidence as a top contender.
South Carolina has been a No. 1 seed for five consecutive seasons and is vying for its fourth national championship, showcasing a legacy of excellence in women's college basketball.
Financial Compensation and Tournament Structure
For the second year running, teams in the women's tournament will receive financial compensation similar to the men's field, based on performance in each round. The NCAA uses "units" to calculate payments to conferences, which are awarded for wins, automatic qualifiers, and at-large bids. This year, additional units have been introduced for teams reaching the championship game and the title winner, enhancing the overall compensation pool without reducing the value of existing units.
In terms of tournament sites, the top 16 seeds in the 68-team field will host first- and second-round games. The regional rounds will continue at neutral locations for the fourth consecutive year, with Fort Worth, Texas, hosting half of the Sweet 16 and Sacramento, California, accommodating the other eight teams. The Final Four is scheduled for Phoenix on April 3, followed by the championship game two days later.
For the first time, the NCAA disclosed the 16 host schools a day early, providing extra time for ticket sales, allowing broadcast partner ESPN to prepare equipment, and enabling the NCAA to distribute marketing materials efficiently.
Notable Streaks and Conference Representation
Tennessee is striving to maintain its remarkable streak of appearing in every NCAA Tournament since the inaugural event in 1982. However, the Lady Vols face challenges with seven consecutive losses and only 16 wins this season, which would be the fewest for an at-large team since Oklahoma had 16 in 2018.
Major conferences such as the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Big 12 are expected to have strong representation in the tournament, highlighting the depth and competitiveness of women's college basketball across the nation.
