Platini Launches Stinging Attack on FIFA President Infantino
Michel Platini, the former president of UEFA, has delivered a withering critique of his one-time subordinate Gianni Infantino, accusing the current FIFA president of being "always a fan of rich and powerful people." The comments were made during an appearance on RMC's 'After Foot' programme, reigniting longstanding tensions between the two football administrators.
Historical Context and Leadership Critique
Platini served as UEFA president from 2007 to 2015, with Infantino acting as his general secretary during much of that period. The relationship has soured significantly since Infantino's ascension to football's most powerful position in 2016. Platini was widely expected to succeed Sepp Blatter as FIFA president until he became embroiled in a criminal investigation concerning a payment from Blatter.
"Infantino is a very good secretary general, a good number two, but not a good number one," Platini stated unequivocally. "I don't think he's good at politics. He's a good administrator, but he's not charismatic and I don't think he says good things."
Questionable Alliances and Political Relationships
The criticism extends beyond personal leadership qualities to Infantino's political associations, particularly his close relationship with United States President Donald Trump. This connection has drawn scrutiny as FIFA prepares for this summer's World Cup finals across North America.
Infantino's administration awarded Trump the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize in December, a decision that has attracted controversy given subsequent geopolitical developments. Since receiving the honour, the Trump administration has:
- Seized Venezuelan president Miguel Maduro, placing him in US custody
- Threatened to annex Greenland
- Launched air strikes against Iran
These actions have intensified questions about FIFA's diplomatic engagements under Infantino's leadership.
Cleared of Wrongdoing but Critical of Successor
Platini, who has been cleared of any wrongdoing regarding the Blatter payment by Swiss courts, offered his assessment from a position of restored credibility. His comments represent the most direct public criticism from a former football leader of Infantino's decade-long presidency.
When contacted for comment by the Press Association, FIFA declined to respond to Platini's allegations. The organisation has previously defended its engagement with world leaders as necessary for football's global development.
Fundamental Differences in Leadership Philosophy
The critique reveals fundamental differences in how the two men view football governance. Platini's comments suggest he believes Infantino prioritises relationships with influential figures over substantive leadership. "He's always been a fan of rich and powerful people. He's always been like that, even when he was secretary general," Platini remarked, indicating this behaviour pattern predates Infantino's FIFA presidency.
As football prepares for its biggest tournament under Infantino's stewardship, these criticisms raise questions about FIFA's direction and the values it promotes through its highest office.
