Prince Harry's AFL Visit Leaves Fans Disappointed After Side Gate Exit
Prince Harry took centre stage on Wednesday morning during a visit to the Western Bulldogs AFL team at their home base in Melbourne's west. However, the event left approximately 100 footy fans feeling very let down after the Duke of Sussex avoided the main entrance.
Royal Engagement at Whitten Oval
The Duke of Sussex arrived in suburban Footscray following his participation in launching a new report highlighting the importance of mental health for new parents, with a particular focus on men. At Whitten Oval, he engaged with Bulldogs stars Tom Liberatore, Matthew Kennedy, and Adam Treloar, attempting to kick and handball a Sherrin footy, though his efforts were described as leaving much to be desired.
Around one hundred dedicated Western Bulldogs supporters gathered at the facility's main entrance, eagerly hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal figure. Their anticipation turned to disappointment when Harry and his entourage discreetly entered through a side gate, bypassing the waiting crowd entirely.
Quiet Departure and Fan Reactions
The fans waited patiently for roughly an hour while Prince Harry attended the engagement inside the Bulldogs' headquarters. They continued craning their necks and peering through glass windows, unaware that the Duke had already made a quiet exit through a different side gate. He departed in his chauffeur-driven vehicle, heading directly to Tullamarine Airport where staffers whisked him through the Qantas terminal to board a commercial flight to Canberra.
Western Bulldogs CEO Ameet Bains revealed the club's initial disbelief upon learning of the pending royal visit. "Our first reaction was one of disbelief and needing to double-check that we had the facts right," he told Nine Newspapers. "Like, have we got the right person here? When we had a staff meeting to inform everyone of the Duke's arrival, there were a few gasps in the audience. There's definitely a level of intrigue in some quarters and excitement in others."
Mental Health Advocacy and Personal Insights
Sports-mad Prince Harry, father to six-year-old Archie and four-year-old Lilibet, participated in a panel discussion with Dr Zac Seidler from the Movember charity at Bulldogs HQ. The charity raises funds for men's health, which influenced Harry's decision to visit the club. During the discussion, he opened up about his personal experiences of fatherhood and urged men to prioritise their mental wellbeing.
"It's the most important and transformational role a guy can ever move into," Harry stated. "That role... gives you purpose. You want to be the best version of yourself for your kids."
In a touching gesture, the Duke's children were given custom 'Archie' and 'Lilibet' jerseys, potentially setting them on the path to becoming Bulldogs fans. One lucky youngster even had the opportunity to kick around with the royal during the visit.
Meghan's Absence and Further Sporting Plans
Harry's wife, Meghan, did not attend the event, which disappointed many fans who are admirers of the television show Suits, in which she previously starred. The trip to Whitten Oval is not the only sporting outing planned for the royal couple during their tour.
They are also scheduled to attend the NSW Waratahs versus Pasifika Moana rugby union clash at Sydney's Allianz Stadium on Friday night. In stark contrast to the Melbourne visit, they will be entertained in a private box at the boutique stadium in Sydney's affluent eastern suburbs as guests of Rugby Australia CEO and former Wallabies star Phil Waugh.
This visit marks Harry and Meghan's first trip to Australia since 2018, following Harry's earlier activities in Melbourne, including touring a centre that provides support to women and children experiencing family violence and homelessness.
