Prince William Joins Greg James on Tandem Bike for Comic Relief Fundraiser
Prince William Joins Greg James on Tandem for Comic Relief

The Prince of Wales made a surprise appearance alongside BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James during his ambitious charity cycling challenge for Comic Relief. William joined James on a tandem bicycle just north of Doncaster, cycling together through the picturesque South Yorkshire countryside.

A Royal Boost for Charity Efforts

William joined the broadcaster on the fifth day of his eight-day, 1,000-kilometer journey from Weymouth to Edinburgh. The prince offered heartfelt praise for James's fundraising initiative, highlighting the importance of volunteering and community support.

"What you've done is set an example about helping out," William told James. "That's the thing. It's volunteering some of your time, putting yourself through a bit of pain at the same time, and supporting others. It's something we do very well in this country, but we don't really shout about it enough."

Celebrating a Major Milestone

During their ride, William revealed that James had raised more than £1 million for Comic Relief through his efforts. "I can tell you, you've raised £1,000,020," the prince announced, adding, "This challenge helps everyone see that. And it's an amazing team effort. Huge well done, Greg."

James expressed his astonishment at the royal surprise, telling William as he finished his time on the bike: "I didn't kill the future king, William, thank you so much, that was a real, real treat. Did you feel safe? You felt secure?"

The Unexpected Invitation

James revealed that he had jokingly invited William to join him during a previous meeting. The two had recorded a special Radio One show about suicide prevention, after which James mentioned his upcoming tandem challenge.

"I said to him, 'I've got this, this little tandem challenge coming up', and jokingly, I went, 'get yourself some lycra on, come on the tandem with me', and he laughed about it, and that was obviously the last I heard," James explained.

A Surprise in Yorkshire

The radio presenter described the moment William appeared during his ride. "Only a couple of people in the touring party knew about it, and suddenly we had to dive off the route," James recalled. "We went down this sort of little dirt track, essentially into what was a truck stop car park, and Prince William was just standing in the middle of Yorkshire."

James noted that William wasn't wearing lycra but was in "sporting attire," and described the experience as feeling like a "weird dream." He added: "That was the tightest I've gripped the handlebars for the whole week. I was like, and then I had to sort of interview him at the same time."

Amplifying the Message

Reflecting on the experience after William departed, James said: "When he left, I just sort of sat down quietly and just thought, fair play, he did not need to do that, but it's really amazing that he has sort of put his all into this challenge and also amplified it, because this is going to spread the whole message of this adventure far and wide."

Earlier in the week, William had sent James a letter wishing him luck as he embarked on his challenging journey. The prince's unexpected participation provided both a morale boost and significant publicity for the Comic Relief fundraiser.
