Rebecca Adlington Celebrates Newborn Daughter's First Swimming Experience
Former Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington was all smiles as she shared sweet Instagram photos documenting her newborn daughter Thea Joy's first swimming lesson on Friday. The 37-year-old athlete, who welcomed her third child last month after enduring two heartbreaking miscarriages over three years, looked radiant in a black and green swimsuit while introducing her baby girl to the water.
Family Support at the Pool
The BBC sports personality was accompanied by her husband Andy Parsons, their two-year-old son Albie, and her eight-year-old daughter Summer from her previous marriage to ex-husband Harry Needs. Adlington also posted an adorable photograph of herself cradling Thea before entering the pool, captioning the moment: 'Thea's first swimming lesson. Loved our lesson this morning, one of us even fell asleep (spoiler it wasn't me).'
Addressing Mum Guilt Criticism
This heartwarming family moment comes just days after Adlington responded to criticism regarding mum guilt. The new mother had shared on Instagram that she treated herself to a manicure but struggled when Thea began crying during the appointment. A kind woman in the salon assisted by looking after the baby, allowing Adlington to enjoy some pampering.
She expressed gratitude, writing: 'Her kindness and taking time out her day was so lovely. I know it seems small but it's the first thing I've done for me in a long time. A huge thank you to her.'
However, some followers focused negatively on the story, with one social media user suggesting that 'kids should always come first' and implying Adlington should feel guilty for prioritizing herself. The Olympic champion shared this message on her Instagram Story, explaining it made her sad and challenging the unfair expectation placed on mothers.
Adlington responded emphatically: 'I didn't choose to have another child... WE chose to have another child. Why is it mum's feel guilty and not "we feel guilty". I relate to this lady so much as I'm sure many of you do, but I want to be better at looking after you, you will be a better parent.'
Emotional Birth Announcement and Family Tribute
Earlier this month, Adlington revealed the emotional circumstances surrounding Thea's birth, disclosing that her grandmother Joyce passed away on the same day she gave birth to her 'rainbow baby.' She honored her late grandmother by giving her daughter the middle name Joy.
The star described spending three days in hospital during the delivery, calling the entire journey a 'rollercoaster.' She elaborated: 'What a rollercoaster this whole experience has been. Three years, two miscarriages, 39 weeks carrying our magical rainbow girl, and 87 hours in hospital. Thea Joy Parsons arrived on 28th February, the very same day my nana, Joyce, passed away. A true full circle moment of life. Joy is a nod to her, and we know Thea will bring us all so much joy.'
Adlington concluded her announcement with a message of support for others experiencing similar challenges: 'We are so incredibly happy she is home and healthy. I know so many of you are still waiting for your rainbow, and we are thinking of you, sending so much love and support your way.'
