Sky Sports Announces Landmark Multi-Year Deal with Dana White's Zuffa Boxing
Sky Sports has finalised a substantial multi-year broadcast agreement with Zuffa Boxing, the boxing promotion founded by UFC president Dana White. This deal represents a major strategic move for both parties, with Sky Sports set to exclusively stage Zuffa Boxing events across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Details of the Agreement and Initial Events
The contract guarantees at least five live boxing shows on UK soil, beginning with Zuffa Boxing 05 scheduled for Sunday, April 5. This inaugural event will feature Andres Cortes versus Eridson Garcia, alongside a bout involving former world champion Feargal McCroy. The partnership aims to leverage Sky Sports' extensive reach to showcase elite boxing talent and build new stars in the region.
Strategic Significance for Sky Sports and Boxing Landscape
This agreement marks a pivotal shift for Sky Sports, which recently ended its association with BOXXER and previously lost Eddie Hearn's Matchroom to DAZN. By aligning with Zuffa Boxing, Sky Sports reinforces its commitment to boxing after over three decades in the sport. Jonathan Licht, Sky Sports’ Chief Officer UK & Ireland, emphasised shared ambitions, stating the platform will "use our platform to both build stars and showcase elite boxing talent here in the UK and internationally."
Dana White's Vision and Industry Reactions
Dana White expressed enthusiasm about the deal, highlighting the UK's historical importance in boxing and Sky Sports' legendary status. He noted, "There’s no bigger or better platform to showcase the best boxing in the UK. This is a massive milestone for Zuffa Boxing." White aims to attract new audiences, saying he wants to "introduce lots of young people who have never seen the sport to the sport of boxing." However, skepticism persists, with Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn openly critical of White's boxing venture, leading to public disputes between the two promoters.
Zuffa Boxing's Recent Moves and Future Prospects
Backed by Saudi boxing figure Turki Alalshikh, Zuffa Boxing has already made significant strides, signing cruiserweight Jai Opetaia and securing British star Conor Benn with a £10 million one-fight deal. Benn will debut on April 11 as chief support to Tyson Fury's comeback fight. White outlined his goal to establish clear champions in every weight class, aiming to make the sport more accessible and recognisable globally. With broadcasts in 88 countries, the Sky Sports deal expands Zuffa Boxing's international footprint, potentially reshaping boxing's promotional dynamics in the UK and beyond.
