Former Rugby League Star Extends Invitation to Reality TV Bride
A former State of Origin representative has stepped into the spotlight with an unexpected offer to a Married At First Sight participant, not for romantic reasons but to defend a city's honour. Terry Campese, the ex-Canberra Raiders captain and current head coach of the Townsville Blackhawks in the Queensland Cup, has publicly invited MAFS bride Bec Zacharia on a date around Townsville after she disparaged the location during the show.
Backlash Sparks a Public Response
The controversy ignited when couples on the reality series compared their honeymoon experiences. Gia Fleur and Scott McCristal revealed they had stayed at the luxurious Ardo hotel in Townsville, prompting Bec to react with a dismissive tone. "Gia and Scott went to Townsville, not Fiji," she remarked sarcastically, adding, "I'm sure they had a nice time, though." This comment quickly spread beyond the programme, drawing criticism from locals and fans alike.
Bec later admitted on radio that she had never actually visited Townsville and had to use Google to locate it, describing it as "beautiful" and issuing a public apology. She proposed flying to the city to make amends with radio hosts Adam and Donny, but with both in relationships, the search for a suitable host led to Campese's involvement.
Campese's Commitment to Community
Terry Campese, a 139-game NRL veteran who represented New South Wales in Origin and was part of Australia's 2008 World Cup squad, has deeply embedded himself in the Townsville community since becoming head coach of the Blackhawks in 2024. Under his leadership, the team achieved a top-four finish in the 2025 Hostplus Cup season. Beyond rugby league, he actively shares his love for the region on social media, posting about sunrise hikes up Castle Hill, fishing trips along the North Queensland coastline, and boating days around Magnetic Island.
"Townsville is not simply where he works; it is where he has chosen to build his life," emphasising his personal connection to the area. When Bec's comments surfaced, Campese felt compelled to respond, stating, "I will show her around town and she'll love [Townsville] by the time she leaves."
A Curated Itinerary to Showcase Charm
Pressed on what the date would entail, Campese outlined a detailed plan designed to highlight Townsville's natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle. "I'm Mr. Romantic ... so a nice early sunrise up Castle Hill, and then jump on a boat to Maggie [Magnetic] Island, hopefully there's been a little bit of rain and the secret waterfall is out," he explained. The itinerary continues with a picnic lunch on the island, followed by a freshening up and a dinner at Terasu, a local Japanese restaurant renowned in the area.
This gesture aims to transform the city from a punchline into a celebrated destination, leveraging Campese's status as a respected sports figure to promote community pride. The offer has sparked discussions about how public figures can influence perceptions and the ongoing impact of reality TV on local reputations.
