Tiger Woods Charged with DUI After Florida Car Crash

Golf icon Tiger Woods has been formally charged with driving under the influence, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test after a car crash in Florida, according to police authorities. The incident occurred as Woods attempted to overtake another vehicle towing a trailer, resulting in his car rolling over.

Arrest and Investigation Details

The 15-time major champion was taken to Martin County Jail following the crash. Sheriff John Budensiek from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office stated that Woods exhibited signs of impairment during roadside tests conducted by DUI investigators. "Mr Woods did exemplify signs of impairment," Budensiek told reporters. "They did several tests on him. He did explain the injuries and surgeries that he’s had and we did take that into account, but they did some in-depth roadside tests."

Woods walked away from the accident without apparent injuries but was questioned by police at the scene. Despite a breathalyser test showing "triple zeros" for alcohol, he refused to provide a urine sample for further analysis, leading to the additional charge of refusal to submit to a lawful test.

Charges and Legal Implications

The charges against Woods include:

  • Driving under the influence (DUI)
  • Property damage
  • Refusal to submit to a lawful test

Sheriff Budensiek clarified that alcohol was not suspected in this case, but impairment from other factors was indicated. "We were really not suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case and that proved to be true," he said. "When it came time for us to ask for a urinary analysis test, he refused and so he has been charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test."

This incident marks a significant legal challenge for Woods, who has only recently returned to competitive golf after a year-long hiatus. The crash and subsequent charges could impact his public image and professional career, adding to a history of personal and legal struggles.
