BBC Breakfast viewers have voiced strong opinions after Chancellor Rachel Reeves appeared on the programme and was questioned about her whereabouts during Prime Minister Keir Starmer's resignation statement. The interview, conducted by business reporter Peter Ruddick, was described as “toe-curling” by the Express, as Reeves visibly struggled to answer a direct query about her absence from Downing Street.
Reeves Questioned on Starmer Resignation Absence
Ruddick pressed Reeves on why she was not present at Downing Street to witness Starmer’s resignation statement, noting that she was instead seen in Westminster Hall hours later taking a selfie with Andy Burnham, who is rumoured to be a potential successor. The reporter asked: “There was a few raised eyebrows in Westminster this week when you weren't in Downing Street to see the Prime Minister's resignation statement, but you were in Westminster a few hours later in Westminster Hall to have a selfie with Andy Burnham then. Where were you watching the statement, the Prime Minister's statement?”
Reeves sidestepped the question, replying: “I don't think anyone can doubt my commitment to the Prime Minister. I've been by his side for six years now as Shadow Chancellor and then as Chancellor of the Exchequer. And I've been there every step of the way making the decisions to turn around our economy.”
Viewers React on Social Media
Viewers quickly took to social media to express their frustration. One person posted: “'Where were you when Keir Starmer made his resignation speech in Downing Street?' Silence from Reeves!!” Another exclaimed: “WATCH Rachel Reeves SQUIRM as BBC Breakfast puts her on the spot for abandoning Starmer and jumping straight into bed with Burnham!”
A third viewer commented: “In a toe-curling moment, the Chancellor was directly challenged... Reeves, visibly uncomfortable, completely ignores the question.” They added: “Oh Rachel... that's exactly why people are questioning your 'commitment'. In his worst moment as PM you abandoned him and you know it. It's not just that you didn't show up but the fact you jumped straight onto team Burnham!”
Another viewer wrote: “Surprised you didn't press her on why she wasn't there or where was she instead.” A further comment read: “Simple question and she still avoids answering.” One user remarked: “When will they realise that this is part of the problem - just answer a direct question!”
Political Context
The interview comes amid speculation that Reeves could face a demotion if Andy Burnham becomes Prime Minister. The Chancellor’s perceived alignment with Burnham, rather than showing public support for Starmer during his resignation, has fuelled criticism. BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One from 6am daily.
