The BBC has cancelled its 2026 Christmas episode of Doctor Who, amid reports that producers are struggling to cast the next Doctor. According to a source quoted by The Sun, the show has “found it difficult to find anyone who’ll take on the part of the 16th Time Lord”, partly due to the “baggage of the most recent series”.
The turmoil follows Ncuti Gatwa’s abrupt departure a year ago, after a single series. His finale saw his Doctor regenerate into Billie Piper, the original companion from the 2005 reboot, but Piper has said she will not take over as the lead. The show has faced years of fan dissatisfaction, tonal swings, and behind-the-scenes upheaval, making the role once as coveted as James Bond now a foreboding proposition.
On paper, the Doctor is an easy part to cast: the character has few consistent traits and adapts to the actor’s strengths. Potential candidates include Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Sheen, Hannah Waddingham, Nick Mohammed, Brett Goldstein, or Tom Hardy. However, Gatwa’s experience serves as a warning: he faced criticism, abuse, and endless discourse, and said the role “takes a lot out of you – physically, emotionally, mentally”.
Even positive responses often come with caveats like “they were a good Doctor, but their episodes were bad”. The fanbase is vocal and opinionated, and showrunner Russell T Davies, who returned in 2021, has also announced he is quitting. Past Doctors have spoken about the intense pressure and fame, with Peter Capaldi describing it as “intense pressure” and David Tennant saying it made him “very vulnerable”.
