A Palestinian driver plowed a car into a crowded bus stop in east Jerusalem on Friday, killing two people, including a six-year-old boy, and injuring five others before being shot dead by an off-duty detective, Israeli police said.
The attack occurred in the Jewish settlement of Ramot in east Jerusalem. The six-year-old victim was pronounced dead at Shaare Zedek Hospital, while the second victim was identified as Alter Shlomo Laderman, a 20-year-old man who married two months ago. An eight-year-old child was in critical condition undergoing CPR.
The suspected attacker, named by local media as Hossein Karaka, a 31-year-old Palestinian from the Isawiya neighborhood, rammed his car into pedestrians waiting at the bus stop. A Facebook account reportedly belonging to Karaka contained posts glorifying Hezbollah and Palestinian militants.
Tensions have been high in Jerusalem since a Palestinian gunman killed seven people outside a synagogue on January 27. Israel's national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, ordered a blockade of the attacker's neighborhood. The militant groups Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad praised the attack but did not claim responsibility.
