Snooker Scandal: Yan Bingtao Banned Until 2027 in Match-Fixing Fallout
Ex-Masters champion Yan Bingtao banned until 2027

The world of professional snooker has been rocked once again as former Masters champion Yan Bingtao faces a lengthy exile from the sport, with his suspension set to keep him off the table until the end of 2027.

The Scandal and Its Key Players

Yan Bingtao was one of ten Chinese players implicated in a widespread match-fixing scandal that came to light in 2023. The Chinese ace was found guilty of rigging four separate matches and placing bets on several others between 2016 and 2022. His initial seven-and-a-half-year ban was reduced to four years after he confessed early and entered a guilty plea.

The most severe punishments were reserved for Liang Wenbo and Li Hang, who received lifetime bans from the sport. The duo were convicted of being at the forefront of the cheating scheme, which included match-fixing and coercing fellow players into manipulating matches.

A Stellar Career Cut Short

The ban represents a dramatic fall from grace for Yan, who was once considered one of snooker's brightest young talents. At just 20 years old, he triumphed at the Masters in 2021, becoming the youngest winner since Ronnie O'Sullivan in 1995 and only the second Chinese player to claim the title after Ding Junhui.

His significant victory saw him defeat top-tier opponents including Neil Robertson, Stuart Bingham, and John Higgins. Just a year before the scandal erupted, Yan was in blistering form at the 2022 World Championship, knocking out Mark Selby before narrowly losing 13-11 to Mark Williams in the quarter-finals.

Current Status of Other Players

Of the ten players originally suspended, five, including Yan, are still serving their bans. However, some have already returned to competition. World champion Zhao Xintong, who was handed an 20-month suspension, has made a remarkable comeback, winning the world title last year after his ban ended.

Reflecting on his time away, Zhao stated: "I had nearly two years not playing in tour competitions and that's why I said my first target was to get through qualifying to the Crucible. I can't believe I went on to be champion, but I am back now and I want to keep going."

Other players like Chang Bingyu and Zhao Jianbo have also completed their suspensions and returned to the professional tour.

Looking Ahead: A Long Road Back

For Yan Bingtao, the path back to professional snooker is a long one. The 25-year-old, who will turn 26 in the coming weeks, is barred from competition until December 2027. His absence will see him miss major tournaments including the 2026 Masters.

This scandal has cast a significant shadow over Chinese snooker, which had been producing a wave of talented players. The rigorous enforcement of bans by the sport's governing bodies underscores a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, aiming to preserve the integrity of the game for future generations.
