A royal author has recounted an 'astonishing' moment when Sarah Ferguson took a phone call from Prince Andrew, referring to him as 'husband' despite their separation. Ingrid Seward, who has spent considerable time with the Duchess of York, shared the anecdote with the Mirror, highlighting the enduring bond between the former couple.
Ferguson and Andrew married in 1986, separated in 1992, and divorced in 1996. Despite this, Seward noted that they have always viewed each other as husband and wife. 'I remember on one occasion a long time ago I was with her and [Andrew] rang up and she stood up and said, "Hello husband",' Seward recalled. 'He wasn't really her husband at that point as they had separated, but that's how they've always seen each other.'
Seward believes Ferguson remains in contact with Andrew, describing her as a 'kind person' who would not want to leave him 'high and dry'. She also suggested that Ferguson may be acting as a 'go-between' for Andrew and their daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, noting that Beatrice has always been closer to Andrew while Eugenie is more independent.
Speculation has surrounded Ferguson's potential financial moves, including a tell-all book or television interview. However, Seward argued that such actions would risk cutting her off from her family and harming her children. 'If she does a book or a tell-all interview she will be cutting herself off from everyone and potentially ruining her children's lives,' Seward said. 'But that might be the only way she can make money.'
Seward added that Ferguson has a 'knack of finding people to look after her' and will likely 'land on her feet', but advised that she should remain under the radar for now. 'She's a sort of hunted woman, there's almost a price on her head,' she concluded.
