Liverpool are set for another summer of upheaval following the appointment of Andoni Iraola as manager. The 43-year-old Basque has impressed at Bournemouth but faces scepticism from club legends about his suitability for the Anfield role.
Jamie Carragher questioned why Liverpool did not appoint Xabi Alonso, who recently joined Chelsea. 'If Liverpool chose Iraola over Alonso, it is very worrying for Liverpool,' Carragher said on The Overlap. He added that Alonso's playing CV and experience at Real Madrid made him a better fit.
Former defender Glen Johnson warned Iraola must handle the weight of expectation at a club of Liverpool's magnitude. 'The unknown is always going to be a question mark until he gets his chance to manage an elite club,' Johnson said, drawing parallels with Brendan Rodgers' tenure.
Danny Murphy expressed doubts about Iraola's ability to implement his high-intensity style at Anfield. 'He's never managed a club of this size before,' Murphy said, adding that the squad may lack the fitness to sustain his pressing game. He stressed the importance of the summer transfer window.
