A mother kept her baby son's body hidden in her flat for 50 years, an inquest has heard. Gladys Briggs, 76, wrapped the infant in cloth and stored it in a suitcase at her council home in Reading.
The remains were discovered in January this year by social workers clearing out the property. Mrs Briggs, who was unmarried at the time of the baby's death, suffered from dementia and died in April before she could explain how the body came to be there.
Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford stated that the cause of the baby's death remains unclear, but DNA tests confirmed that Mrs Briggs was the mother. The inquest continues.
