Lumo Train Halted For A Day After Launch Due To Fault

Britain's rail network faced widespread disruption on Thursday, with operators citing a range of issues including train faults, signal failures, and crew shortages. The chaos came just a day after the latest strike by the Aslef drivers' union, which affected 16 train operators.

Among the affected services, Lumo trains were delayed at Grantham due to a signalling system fault. This came shortly after the operator's launch, highlighting ongoing reliability concerns. Other operators, including Chiltern Railways, West Midlands Railway, and Thameslink, also reported significant delays and cancellations.

Passengers expressed frustration on social media, with many describing overcrowded conditions. One Greater Anglia passenger said they were 'jammed in like sardines', while a Thameslink passenger reported being 'crammed into a 6am train with no chance of moving forward'.

The disruption was partly attributed to the aftermath of the Aslef strike, which ended on Wednesday. An amended timetable was in place on some lines due to rolling stock being in the wrong depots. Additionally, an overtime ban by Aslef continued throughout the week, exacerbating staff shortages.

Former transport minister Norman Baker expressed concern that repeated cancellations could drive passengers away from the rail network. A spokesperson for London TravelWatch said they were frustrated by the continued disruption, acknowledging that train companies face challenges in producing timetables at short notice.
