Chancellor Rachel Reeves has publicly backed Andy Burnham to become the next prime minister, amid speculation she could be replaced as Chancellor if he takes office. Speaking ahead of the British Chambers of Commerce global annual conference, Reeves said she is “backing Andy” and believes he would be a “great prime minister,” but refused to comment on reports that she might accept another role in a Burnham-led cabinet.
Reeves Avoids Questions on Her Future Role
When asked about the possibility of being replaced, Reeves said: “I’m not going to pre-empt the decisions that the new prime minister will make. I’m backing Andy. I think he’d be a great prime minister, but those are his decisions, not mine to make.” The Makerfield MP, who has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Sir Keir Starmer, is reportedly yet to settle on his choice of chancellor.
Reeves Defends Record Under Starmer
Reeves emphasised her loyalty to Sir Keir Starmer, stating that “no one could doubt” her commitment over the past six years. “I’ve been by his side for six years now as shadow chancellor and then as Chancellor of the Exchequer,” she told the public broadcaster. She added: “I know that whoever is prime minister and chancellor in the future will inherit a stronger economy than the one I inherited two years ago.”
Leadership Contest Intensifies
Few potential challengers to Burnham have emerged as the contest picks up pace. Former armed forces minister Al Carns, who resigned earlier this month over defence spending, remains a possible contender, calling for a “proper debate” on the country’s future. Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Ed Davey avoided questions about a potential coalition with a Labour Party led by Burnham, saying: “I'm very confident about when my party is going to be. It will be, I think, Mrs Badenoch who will be worried about questions about coalition.”
