Shell has reported $6.9bn in profits since the start of the Iran war, capitalising on surging energy prices. The massive earnings have sparked outrage and renewed demands for higher taxes on fossil fuel companies to help those struggling with rising costs.
The Guardian’s energy correspondent, Jillian Ambrose, discussed the issue with Lucy Hough, highlighting the growing public anger over windfall profits amid a cost-of-living crisis.
Critics argue that such profits should be used to fund support for households and businesses hit hardest by inflation, rather than being returned to shareholders.
