Southampton winger Leo Scienza has become the first player to publicly break ranks following the club's expulsion from the Championship play-off final after being found guilty of spying. The Saints were kicked out of the final after the EFL upheld their punishment, meaning Middlesbrough will face Hull City at Wembley instead.
Scienza's Emotional Response
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Scienza wrote: "Disappointment, anger, sadness. It's difficult to find the right words for what we're all feeling right now. What has happened over the last days is heartbreaking for the club, for every player in this dressing room, and above all for our supporters. A moment like this should never end the way it did."
He added: "I feel sorry for every football fan, as well as the players and supporters of Hull and Boro, who were caught up in all of this chaos too. We gave everything for this dream. Day after day, sacrifice after sacrifice, always believing we could bring this club back to where it belongs. For me, the dream of playing in the Premier League was something I fought for with everything I had. That's why this pain cuts so deep."
Club Statement and Fallout
Southampton released a statement on Wednesday night confirming the League Arbitration Panel had upheld the sanctions. The club acknowledged the "extremely disappointing outcome" and apologised to supporters, players, staff, and commercial partners. They also promised to rebuild trust and learn from the events.
Manager Tonda Eckert now faces the sack after it emerged he was aware of the three spying trips to Oxford United, Ipswich, and Middlesbrough. The club also expects further punishment from the FA, which could include bans for those involved.
Players Consider Options
It is understood that Southampton's players are considering their options after being denied a shot at promotion back to the Premier League due to the actions of their own staff. Scienza's public comments are the first indication of the turmoil behind the scenes.
Southampton will start the 2026/27 season on -4 points in the Championship, while Middlesbrough prepare for the play-off final against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday.
