Coronation Street: Summer Spellman Arrested for Murder, Exit Possible
Summer Spellman Arrested for Murder on Coronation Street

Summer Spellman has been arrested for the murder of Theo Silverton on Coronation Street, a development that could spell the end for Harriet Bibby's character after six years on the ITV soap. The university student, portrayed by Bibby, has been at the centre of the latest whodunnit and was unveiled as one of the suspects following the death of the evil scaffolder during the much-hyped Murder Week.

Murder Week Fallout

Theo, played by former Tracy Beaker star James Cartwright, had been abusing his partner Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) for nearly a year before his body was discovered. Alongside Summer, suspects include Christina Boyd, George Shuttleworth, Gary Windass, and Danielle Silverton. Prior to the murder, Summer learned that Theo had been abusing Todd and was also responsible for the death of her adoptive father Billy.

In Thursday's episode of the world's longest-running TV soap, George, aware of Summer's diary containing potentially incriminating entries, approached DS Lisa Swain. He revealed that he had seen Summer heading towards Theo's flat on the night of the murder, contradicting her initial statement to police. Summer, who was preparing to leave for America, was apprehended by Swain as she packed her bags.

Swain declared: 'Step away from the car, please. A witness has come forward placing you at the scene of Theo Silverton's murder. You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you don't mention when questioned something you rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence.' Todd, unaware that George was the informant, was left questioning who would betray Summer.

Fan Reactions and Character Future

Reacting to the arrest, one fan wrote on X: 'WTF is wrang wi George?! He disnae want tae git Summer intae bother, but he runs tae the polis tae clype on her, based on a private diary he'd nae business readin(?!) Whit a c***!' Another commented: 'Personally, I'm glad this got said today. It was harsh, but you can see why a part of Summer would blame Todd for keeping silent about Theo's violent behaviour, and she is still grieving for Billy. It's cleared the air now, and she did apologise.'

Could this lead to Summer's permanent departure? Actress Harriet Bibby, who took over the role from Matilda Freeman in 2020, has recently stepped away from the cobbles to perform a one-woman play and has hinted that her alter-ego might be guilty. Speaking about the storyline, she said: 'She's such an unexpected suspect in this, but it's also completely understandable why she's a suspect, and so she should be.'

Bibby, who previously appeared in Doctors and Brassic before joining Coronation Street, even believed that Summer could have been the victim instead. She stated: 'I think there's a scenario where she might have felt like it was either her that was going to be hurt, or maybe even killed, or it was him. I think when people are pushed to that point, it's interesting to see what they will do to survive. It's no secret that Theo was very threatening, he even said that he was going to bury Summer if she got in his way, so there could have been a moment where she felt like it was either her or him.'

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream from 7am on ITVX.
