Viewers of Channel 5's new psychological drama The Fortune have expressed widespread disappointment following its debut on Tuesday night. The series, starring Eleanor Tomlinson as waitress Amanda Blakefield, follows her inheritance of a vast estate from a stranger, sparking conflict with the deceased's family.
Many took to X to criticise the plot and character decisions. One viewer questioned: 'Wouldn't they phone her and ask her into their office instead of just barging into her workplace?' Another mocked the protagonist's actions, saying: 'How to sort out an unexpected inheritance: (a) consult a solicitor, and get it sorted out; or: (b) throw away the solicitor's letter and barge in uninvited to a grieving family.'
The show was branded 'a dud' and 'absolute s***e' by some, while others noted it was 'tipping ever so slowly' to the 'ludicrous' end of the spectrum. Complaints included 'exaggerated sighs' and 'pauses'. The Telegraph awarded it just one star out of five, calling it 'rubbish'.
However, a minority saw potential, praising the cast which includes Matthew Lewis, Rebecca Front, Callum Woodhouse, Denis Lawson, and Stephen Tompkinson. One viewer said: 'So far looking good,' while another highlighted the 'really good cast' of 'well known faves'.
