A significant transformation in how millions of UK residents make phone calls is approaching, and homeowners are urged to take action before the impending deadline. The aging copper landline network, which has served the nation for decades, is being phased out and replaced with modern technology. This upgrade, known as Digital Voice, relies on broadband connections for calls, offering enhanced reliability and new features such as clearer conversations, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved screening to reduce scams and nuisance marketing.
The Switch-Off Timeline
The complete transition is scheduled for January 2027, and with the date drawing nearer, BT has launched a campaign to raise awareness. Fronted by Clare Balding, the 'Don't Put Off the Switch' initiative encourages households to verify their landline readiness for the digital age. This push coincides with research indicating that Britons often postpone essential tasks, assuming that if something still functions, there is no urgency.
Why You Must Act Now
Clare Balding emphasized, "When your provider gets in touch, it’s vitally important you act to ensure your landline services keep running smoothly. If you don’t respond, the services you rely on could be disrupted. The good news is you won’t be on your own – BT will guide you every step of the way."
Customers can expect to retain their existing phone numbers, and costs should remain unchanged—bills are not anticipated to increase during the transition. In most cases, no engineer visit is required; households simply need to plug their current phone into their broadband hub instead of the copper wall socket. Exceptions may apply, and if issues arise, contacting the provider can resolve them.
What Is Digital Voice?
Digital Voice is BT's new home phone service that replaces copper lines with broadband technology. It introduces modern features absent from traditional landlines, including Multi Call for three-way conferencing and call diversion to any number, including mobiles. Call quality is significantly improved, eliminating crackling sounds, though a compatible Digital Home phone is necessary to access these benefits.
Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, stated, "As our research shows, it’s easy to overlook messages from service providers, but doing so could disrupt essential connections. The switch to digital landlines is a significant, once-in-a-generation upgrade to the UK’s communications infrastructure. It’s important to take action when contacted, so everyone can benefit from more reliable, secure technology and stay connected to the services they rely on."
Special Considerations
BT advises customers with additional needs, such as those using telecare devices or pendant alarms, to inform their provider promptly to ensure appropriate support is arranged. For most households, upgrading to Digital Voice will not alter their phone usage. The cost of Digital Voice and broadband is bundled into a single package price, with no extra charge for the new service.
