Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he has entered into talks over taking charge of the Germany national team, revealing that he has asked Red Bull to lift the block on his contract. The former Liverpool manager, currently working as a pundit for the 2026 World Cup on Magenta TV, stated that the German Football Association (DFB) approached him after Julian Nagelsmann's resignation.
Klopp Confirms Talks with DFB
"Yes, I can confirm the talks," Klopp said on Magenta TV. "Things moved along quite quickly. Julian [Nagelsmann] has resigned and the DFB is working on a successor. And in the course of these considerations, they approached me." Nagelsmann steered Germany to the round of 32 at the World Cup before a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, leading to his departure.
Contract Situation with Red Bull
Klopp, 59, has been head of global football at Red Bull since leaving Liverpool in 2024. He explained that he wants to leave on good terms. "I have an existing contract with Red Bull. I've said many times how much I enjoy this job. As a person, I usually honour contracts. But I've also made it clear that I'm interested in talks with the DFB," he said. "I need to talk to Oliver Mintzlaff. He's my employer. We've already discussed things. I assume he won't stand in my way. I was there for 19 months. It was an intense time. Ideally, everyone wins in the end. Red Bull needs to come out of this clean."
Ready for Return to Management
Klopp stated he is ready to return to football management after a two-year break. "I'm more than ready now, so I'm prepared," he said. The DFB had earlier announced their interest in a statement: "Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp. He has already signalled his general willingness to take on the position."
