A FIFA error at the World Cup in Canada allowed viewers to hear referee Anthony Taylor's VAR discussions live on television. The camera positioned next to the monitor at Toronto Stadium captured Taylor's dialogue with colleagues in the VAR room during the group stage match between Senegal and Iraq.
Incident Details
The 47-year-old Premier League referee upgraded an initial yellow card to a red card for Iraqi defender Rebin Sulaka after reviewing the monitor. Sulaka had fouled former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane as he raced through on goal. Taylor was heard saying: "There's a player on the far side who is going to get to the ball? Play it for me. So the next touch with the attacker, one touch forward and he shoots on goal, yes? The player on the far side will not get to the ball before he shoots."
Confirming the decision, he added: "After review, the Iraq number two performs a deliberate holding offence and denies a clear goalscoring opportunity. No covering defenders, therefore my final decision is red card."
Match Impact
Senegal capitalized on the man advantage, scoring five goals in a rout. Ismaila Sarr doubled the lead, Pape Gueye added a brace, and Iliman Ndiaye sealed the 5-0 victory. The win moved Senegal to +2 goal difference and gave them their first points, boosting their knockout stage hopes.
This result also affected Scotland's World Cup chances. Following their 3-0 defeat to Brazil, Scotland slipped outside the top eight in the third-place table, now behind Algeria. Steve Clarke's side needs favorable results to reach the last 32 for the first time.
